Your post dates from about 6-7 weeks ago, so by now you've probably seen you're not alone. I'm in the same boat. Adobe issued a warning not to upgrade to ElCapitan but only after most of their users had already fallen into this tar pit. A recommended fix of installing a vintage version (6) of Java helped somewhat, but the problems are on-going at a somewhat more manageable level — work takes only two or three times as long to do, rather than being almost impossible. But it's still been catastrophic for a major project as its final deadline looms.

I just submitted a bug report on this, but thought I would also ask the forum as well. I just upgraded to After Effects CS6 on a MAC OS X 10.6.8 My probelm is that for certain effects, the RAM preview is not clearing after I make a change. In particular, with 'Particle Playground' I have the laye. Since Installing Mavericks on my mac pro, the keyboard shortcuts, such as zooming in/out, undo etc, intermittently do not respond. I have to click on another tool in the tool bar to get the keyboard to respond again. The problem returns intermittently and seemingly not as a result of the Auto Save function. My mac pro 15' has 8gb of ram which is more than enough for the type of work I do.I am. It seems clear that InDesign is doing what I recall heavy-duty programs doing often (maybe most of the time) many years ago — e.g. pre-Adobe Framemaker on my 1990 Next computer, and anything memory-intensive on my first Mac circa 1999... that is, as the program runs low on available memory, it starts to go into a partial shutdown, reducing all non-essential displays, like the font menu and the graphics on pages, presumably to postpone crashing. Kinda like a human organism going to shock and withdrawing all its reduced life-force to vital organs.


sometime 10-15 years ago, I discovered Mac's get-info finder-window had a wonderful little solution, in which the user simply increases the amount of memory available to a big program! (Highlight the program's icon, click 'get info' and voila — all better!!!) This feature was eliminated in the later versions of OSX, since I guess everyone was assumed to have enough RAM to handle anything and the system itself would automatically divvy up the memory supply among programs.


IT SEEMS OBVIOUS THAT OUR HUGELY INCONVENIENT AND COSTLY PROBLEMS WITH ADOBE INDESIGN MUST BE DUE TO THE OPERATING SYSTEM LOSING ITS ABILITY TO ASSIGN MEMORY IN NECESSARY QUANTITIES. We no longer have the ability (so far as I know) to inspect, let alone reassign, how much memory is available to our software, but I'm sure InDesign must be getting about 1/4 of what it needs to run well (as it always did until now). I think any other kind of solution is a waste of time — what we need is an operating system that either reliably assigns memory as needed, or allows the user to do so.


This is, as you know, a very big deal... the whole world of graphic design, and publishing, pretty much runs on InDesign and OSX. For individual freelancers this glitch is the difference between staying in business and applying to flip burgers at McDonald's.


If Apple can provide a clue for how to override ElCapitan's utterly dysfunctional memory-assignment system and do a manual adjustment, sending RAM to InDesign, we would all be very grateful. Perhaps the next ElCapitan upgrade could restore that ability in the GetInfo panel! It may have been obsolete during the period of snow leopards etc, but it's obviously time to revive it!


If Apple had to pay compensation to all the publishers and designers for losses and damages, you can bet it would already be restored in the 10.11.2 update.


I suggest that all the helpless whining we've been doing on forums in the past couple of months should turn into a sharply focused demand to restore manual memory assignments. I'm not a computer whiz, but I have no doubt it would solve the CS5/6 InDesign disaster (and there seem to be similar issues with the cloud version too).

If Adobe Application Manager hasn’t already told you about this, go ahead and check for new updates by choosing Help > Updates. The best way to check for updates is by closing all Adobe applications other than Adobe Bridge, and choosing Help > Updates in Adobe Bridge; this ensures that all processes related to Adobe video applications have been quit and can be updated safely.

Ideally, you should install the updates automatically by choosing Help > Updates, but you can also directly download the update packages from the download page for Windows or Mac OS by choosing the “Adobe After Effects CS6 11.0.3” update for your operating system.

Updates are cumulative, so this update includes the changes made in the After Effects CS6 (11.0.1) update and After Effects CS6 (11.0.2) update.

After Effects CC (12.0) and After Effects CS6 (11.0.0, 11.0.1, and 11.0.2) used the OptiX 2.0 library from Nvidia for the ray-traced 3D renderer. After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) uses the new OptiX 3.0 library—as does After Effects CC (12.1), which is due for release soon.

The new OptiX 3.0 library has many advantages, with the most important being the following:

  • fixes a crash on Mac OSX v10.9 (Mavericks)
  • improved performance, including improvements with multiple GPUs

After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) system requirements are the same as the system requirements for After Effects CS6 (11.0.2), with two exceptions:

  • requirement of CUDA 5.0 or later for GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer (was CUDA 4.0)
  • ability of After Effects CS6 (11.0.3) to run on Mac OS X v10.9 (Mavericks)

One of the changes in this update is a new version of the OptiX 3.0 library for the ray-traced 3D renderer. GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer with this new library requires CUDA 5.0 or higher. However, CUDA 5.0 is not compatible with Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard); therefore, you will not be able to use the GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer on Mac OS X v10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) with After Effects CS6 (11.0.3). Other features should still work as before on Mac OS X v10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). If you use Mac OS X v10.6.8 and depend on the GPU acceleration of the ray-traced 3D renderer, don’t install this update.
